Members of Tustin’s boys basketball program and head coach Ringo Bossenmeyer are grieving following the death of 2013 Tustin High graduate and former varsity basketball player Bret Taj McKinney, who died on Monday, Jan. 1 in a traffic accident in Corona.
McKinney, 22, a popular and hard working member of the 2013 squad, was remembered fondly by former teammates, coaches and family members before Friday’s game with Kennedy. All the Tustin players wore T-shirts with McKinney’s picture on it and his last name.
“The basketball game was secondary as prior to the game we honored the life of 2013 THS graduate Bret McKinney who passed away on Jan.1, 2018,” Bossenmeyer said Tuesday. “Bret was an integral member of the 2013 CIF championship basketball team and also played volleyball at THS. We are heartbroken and devastated for the loss of Bret Taj McKinney.”
Bossenmeyer said the accident investigation is on-going and he did not know any additional details.
The tribute on Friday night in the Tustin gymnasium was designed to honor McKinney, who was a 6-2 forward and the sixth man on the 2013 team that finished 31-3 and defeated Royal 49-32 to win the CIF 3AAA title.
