Ocean Lakes built a 15-0 lead just four minutes into the game and then held off fiesty Granby 28-14 in a Class 6 Region A quarterfinal victory Friday at Kellam High in Virginia Beach.
Quarterback Xander Jedlick ran 7 yards for a touchdown on the Dolphins’ first possession. The second time Ocean Lakes (10-1) got the ball, Jedlick threw a 51-yard TD pass to Jalen Smith on the first play.
“An athlete like Jalen Smith, you can’t try to match up one-on-one,” Jedlick said. “It was a pre-snap read. As soon as I dropped back, he beat the corner, and it was over.”

Two Ocean Lakes turnovers helped Granby (6-5) keep its hopes alive. On the Dolphins’ third possession, the Comets’ Ramone Nash picked off a Jedlick pass and returned it 65 yards for a touchdown.
Ocean Lakes moved back ahead by two touchdowns on the third play of the second quarter when Jaevon Becton bulled in from the 1. But the Dolphins fumbled on their next possession, and seven plays later Granby’s Shaviaea Williams sprinted 21 yards for a TD.
Williams was the Comets’ spark, rushing for 103 yards on 18 carries and catching a pass for 5 yards. Beyond his 108 total yards, his teammates amassed just 21 yards of offense. Four different Granby quarterbacks attempted a total of seven passes, with just the one completion to Williams.
Iniko Tauti scored the game’s final touchdown with 4:10 left until halftime on a 16-yard run, and he and Tyler Browning combined for 151 rushing yards.
“We have a good a good rotation with our tailbacks,” Jedlick said. “We don’t want one to get tired.”
Key stats: OL-Tyler Browning 18-79 yards rushing; Iniko Tauti 12-72, TD rushing; Jedlick 8-30 rushing; 4-6-1, 85 yards.
