OC Fair shuts down ‘G Force’ ride as precaution after deadly Ohio fair accident – Orange County Register

The death of a man who was killed when a thrill ride at the Ohio State Fair malfunctioned this week prompted OC Fair officials to close a similar carnival ride Wednesday night, July 26, as a precaution.

The ride — known as the G Force — has been taken apart and is undergoing inspection, said Terry Moore, director of communications for the OC Fair & Event Center.

“As soon as we heard of the accident in Ohio we knew we had a similar ride so we elected to shut it down,” Moore said Thursday. “We just wanted to be as safe as we could and take every precaution.”

Tyler Jarrell, 18, of Columbus, Ohio, died Wednesday and seven others were injured at the Ohio State Fair when the Fire Ball ride malfunctioned and sent riders into the air.

The Ohio fair, one of the largest in the country, opened Wednesday, but all rides were closed and awaiting additional inspection.

Fire Ball rides have also been shut down in six parks across California, including Knott’s Berry Farm, a statement from California Department of Industrial Relations said.

The Amusement Ride and Tramway Unit of the California Division of Occupational Safety and Health contacted several owners of the ride, including OC Fair officials, asking them to shut down until receiving clearance from its manufacturers.

Moore said inspectors were waiting to hear from the ride’s manufacturer, RCS Fun, to see if there’s any reason to keep it offline.

Calls to RCS Fun were not immediately returned.

The G Force has provided rides at the OC Fair for several years without incident, Moore said.

Each of the fair’s 66 rides are inspected daily by an independent carnival ride inspection company or by RCS Fun employees, in addition to yearly inspections conducted by the state, Moore said.
