Needles, 85 spray paint cans among the haul at Bolsa Chica beach cleanup – Orange County Register

NEWPORT BEACH — Nearly 200 volunteers combed Bolsa Chica State Beach during the Surfrider Foundation’s first beach cleanup of the year on Saturday, Jan. 13.

Hundreds of straws, plastic bottle caps and more than 85 spray paint cans were among the many items found after the first storm of the year flushed trash down the local rivers, dumping debris onto the beach.

“It’s the first one of 27 planned throughout the year,” said Tony Soriano, Chairman of the Huntington Beach/Seal Beach Chapter of the Surfrider Foundation. “Last year, we took 7 tons of trash off local beaches.”

One of those who attended was 22-year-old Stephanie Do of Long Beach, who brought along two friends.

“It was a new year’s resolution to be more friendly to the earth,” Do said.
