As members of Woman’s Life Chapter 855 in Memphis celebrate six years together, they are taking a look back at the past year’s accomplishments while also looking forward to the future.
The local chapter is a part of Women’s Life Insurance Society, a national organization based in Port Huron that was established in 1892 and aims to prepare women for a secure financial future through the sale of life insurance and annuity products and support community outreach, its website states.
In January 2016, Woman’s Life Insurance Society supported the Food for Kids Backpack Program at Memphis Community Schools by matching funds raised during a chili cook-off at Memphis Elementary School up to $500
“There were many compliments on this event,” said Diana Zhang, press agent for the local chapter.
The group assembled book shelves for the Divine Mercy Missionary Center at Holy Family Parish in Memphis in February 2016 with help from a $500 grant from the national society.
In March 2016, the society matched funds raised in a quilt raffle benefitting Community Enterprises in St. Clair County.
A scrapbooking event debuted in April 2016.
“It was a fun event,” Zhang said. “Many had never done scrapbooking before.”
Chapter members also made fleece blankets for the McLaren Port Huron pediatric ward.
They hosted a bottle and can drive with the society, matching up to $500 to support Wings of the Harbor in Port Huron, went to a Tiger’s game in June and dyed silk scarves for the breast cancer program at the Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer Institute with a grant from the society.
The group collected items for soldiers overseas for Christmas in 2016, and collected new twin sheets, new underwear and socks for homeless veterans.
