Meet Larry Liguori, the ‘birdman of Laguna Woods’ – Orange County Register

“Hi babe!” were the first audible words a reporter could make out, upon walking into the Liguori household, coming from a beautiful white bird with bright orange feathers on its crest.

The comedian’s name is Gabby and although that may not be his trade, it is surely his favorite pastime. Gabby’s become somewhat of a celebrity in the neighborhood since Liguori — his owner and best friend — started taking him on walks around the cul de sac.

“The (neighbors) look forward to seeing him, they’re amazed at how much he talks,” said Liguori, who has been dubbed the “birdman of Laguna Woods.”

Liguori said Gabby’s conversations usually begin with “Hi, how are you?” and end with “Bye-bye,” but to his more well-known friends, he’ll add an “I love you.”

Liguori, 76, and his wife Robin, 72, rescued Gabby nearly eight years ago from the nonprofit organization Loving All Animals in Palm Springs, where the couple used to live until moving to Laguna Woods one year ago. They don’t know much about Gabby’s past life, except for a few phrases he’s kept.

“If I do something he doesn’t like he’ll say, ‘Damn you,’ but it’s rare,” Liguori said, with a chuckle.

Also, Gabby calls his owner “Francois,” probably a former owner and past love of his, Luguori said.
