Outlook: Mater Dei is playing in its first CIF State championship game, which the state has been holding since 2006. The Monarchs, champions of CIF Southern Section Division 1, are No. 1 in national rankings compiled by and USA Today. They defeated St. John Bosco 49-24 in the Division 1 final two weeks ago. Junior quarterback JT Daniels, named the Gatorade state player of the year this week, passed for 299 yards and five touchdowns in the Division 1 final. Amon-Ra St. Brown, a U.S. Army All-American, had eight receptions for 150 yards and a touchdown, and Bru McCoy had three touchdown catches. The Monarchs’ average margin of victory is 33 points. Mater Dei is 0-4 against De La Salle. The teams last played in 2001 when De La Salle won 34-6. De La Salle has won a state-record seven state football championships. The Spartans are 7-4 in state championship games. They continue to run the veer-option offense that has perplexed opponents for years. De La Salle played in last year’s state Open Division championship game and lost to St. John Bosco 56-33 at Sacramento State. The Spartans’ leading offensive weapon is senior running back Kairee Robinson (5-9, 190), who has rushed for 1,051 yards and averages 11 yards a carry. De La Salle senior defensive tackle Tuli Letuligasenoa has committed to USC. De La Salle and Mater Dei both played their most recent games on Dec. 2. They have a common opponent – Bishop Gorman of Las Vegas. Gorman defeated De La Salle 34-7, and lost to Mater Dei 35-21.
