It was a 1-2 finish for brothers Alex and Brett Tonkin of Carbondale in the 30-lap Modified Mid-Season Championship race at Afton Motorsports Park in New York on July 21.
Alex took the lead from Matt Roberts on lap 15. With 10 laps to go, he pulled away from Brett on a restart and went on to capture his second career Modified win.
With his victory, Alex is fifth in the standings with 381 points. That’s 67 behind leader Andy Bachetti. Brett Tonkin is 10th with 352 points.
Penn Can Speedway in Susquehanna has a busy weekend scheduled.
Tonight at 7 is the “Pappy” Beaven Memorial and Legends Night. This is the evening that honors the track’s founder and builder, as well as past drivers.
Modifieds, 602 Sportsman, Factory Stocks and Four-Cylinder Stocks are on the program, as is the Xcel Modified North/South Tour.
On Sunday at 5 p.m., Penn Can added a program, headlined by the Grit American Racing Series Southern Riders Division U-Can Thirty — a 30-lap feature for 602 Sportsman paying $1,000 to win. This event was supposed to be held at Skyline Raceway Park in Cortland, New York. But when Skyline cancelled, Penn Can stepped in to host the race.
Also on the card are Factory Stocks, Xcel Modifieds and 602 Wingless Sprints.
Local drivers swept the top three spots in the 30-lap Modified feature at Five Mile Point Speedway in Kirkwood, New York, on July 22. Nick Rochinski of Dickson City won his second feature of the season. Mike Loney from Taylor was second and Lake Ariel’s Kevin Bates was third. … Saturday at 6 p.m. at Five Mile Point is the 53rd Heath Memorial Race, honoring the track’s founders Irving and Anna Heath.
