La Habra spreads the wealth in dominating victory – Orange County Register

MISSION VIEJO — Ninth-ranked La Habra didn’t let a tough loss to No. 2 Mission Viejo last week derail its season.

The Highlanders dominated Oak Grove of San Jose from the opening whistle Saturday, winning 49-0 in a Brothers in Arms Classic game at Mission Viejo High.

Seven Highlanders scored touchdowns, prompting La Habra coach Frank Mazzotta to express joy for his many options.

“In all the years that we’ve been pretty good at La Habra, we’ve had games like that with multiple people scoring,” Mazzotta said. “That’s the nice thing, it’s not always a one-man show.”

La Habra quarterback Zach Fogel completed 5 of 8 passes for 155 yards and three touchdowns.

“We didn’t think about the loss too much, we just tried to get better. We didn’t treat this team any differently than we did Mission,” Fogel said. “It was a good day. The receivers ran good routes and gave me some good space to throw the ball.”

Skyler Taylor got the Highlanders’ first score, capping a seven-play, 48-yard drive with a 7-yard touchdown run. The score was Taylor’s 10th touchdown run of the season.

Oak Grove (0-3) attempted a field goal on the ensuing possession but the kick was short. Isaiah Alcocer caught the kick at the 1-yard line and returned it 99 yards for a touchdown to extend the lead to 14.

“I think that’s the first time I’ve ever seen that in my years of coaching. It was really fun to watch,” Mazzotta said.

On La Habra’s next two possessions, Fogel completed touchdown passes to Mitch Anderson and Deavyn Woullard to extend the lead to 28. Jacobah Fuamatu and Kalani Washington also scored for the Highlanders (2-2), who went ahead 42-0 at halftime.

Oak Grove has been outscored, 126-6, in its three games this season. The Eagles turned the ball over three times. Alcocer and Tyler Kiehl had interceptions for the Highlanders.

Aaron Young scored a TD in the fourth quarter to finish the scoring.
