Known for its long shelf life, fruitcake can last for years while remaining edible, particularly when it is pickled or aged and stored properly. In the United States, Dec. 27 is recognized as National Fruitcake Day.
Fruitcake used to be a staple during the 18th and 19th centuries and was considered a delicacy because of the expensive materials, according to Smithsonian.com. However, once it became mass produced and largely shipped by mail order, it left consumers with a bad taste in their mouths (pun intended) due to its dry texture.
