“I’ll never be recovered”: Davina McCall’s years of addiction hell and how AA keeps her on right track

Superfit TV presenter Davina McCall is the picture of health, but it wasn’t always the case.

The former Big Brother host’s amazing body and chiselled abs make her the envy of women half her age.

She has three kids and lives the good life with TV presenter husband Matthew Robertson in a £3.2million, eight-bedroom mansion.

But the bubbly star who seems to have it all also faces a life-long, daily battle against the demons which have threatened to tear her life apart.

She fought anorexia as a teenager then became a cocaine, heroin and alcohol addict for six years.

Davina rose to fame during the 90s

Davina will be 50 in October but still attends weekly Alcoholics Anonymous sessions to keep her life on track.

She told the Sunday People: “I’ll definitely never be recovered. I love going to my AA meetings and don’t think I will ever stop.

“They are very welcoming. All my mates are there, it’s a social thing and they inspire me.”

It’s all a far cry from Davina’s troubled childhood and youth when her addictions left her nearly bankrupt.

She got clean with the help of then boyfriend, guitar legend Eric Clapton, 23 years her senior.

She landed a job presenting her own television show on MTV.

Davina would go on to become a huge telly star, fronting quiz shows such as The Million Pound Drop, reality programmes like The Jump and TV talent competition Got To Dance.

She has also won the nation’s heart by co-presenting Comic Relief with Lenny Henry and, in 2014, running, swimming and cycling 500 miles for Sport Relief.

But her path to success has not been straight forward. She bravely sought help after a friend nearly disowned her.
