Gilmore likes surfing idea for Comm Games – SBS

Surfing star Stephanie Gilmore would love to see the Gold Coast find a way to involve the sport for the 2018 Commonwealth Games.

Surfing has been shortlisted to be included as a sport at the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo.

But while organisers recently included beach volleyball to make its Commonwealth Games debut in 2018, surfing won’t be a part of the Gold Coast games.

Gilmore says it would be a shame if such an important part of the city’s sporting landscape is overlooked.

“The Gold Coast is renowned for its perfect surf and its beaches,” Gilmore said.

“I don’t think anyone can run away from the fact it is a surf town.”

The six-time world champion says if it’s possible to hold an exhibition event during the Commonwealth Games she’d be fully behind the idea.

“That’d be cool,” she said.

“I don’t know how the WSL (World Surf League) works with that. Obviously there’s talk of Olympic games and all that sort of stuff so they’re obviously interested in it.

“There’s plenty of pro surfers that live here so may as well do something.”
