Driver arrested after Newport Beach collision that left a bicyclist dead – Orange County Register

A Santa Ana driver was arrested early Saturday morning after police say he fled the scene of a Newport Beach collision that left a bicyclist dead.

At about 1:19 a.m., officers responded to reports of a vehicle striking a pair of bicyclists on northbound Newport Boulevard near Industrial Way, Newport Beach Police Sgt. Justin Morouse said.

One of the bicyclists was killed, Morouse said. Orange County Coroner’s Office officials on Saturday afternoon identified him as Jose Vasquez-Perez, 41, of Costa Mesa.

The extent of the injuries suffered by the second cyclist wasn’t immediately clear.

The driver fled before officers arrived, Morouse said, but was located a short time later attempting to push the vehicle believed to be involved in the collision out of the roadway on Newport Boulevard, near 16th Street.
