A family feels betrayed by a caregiver — who was supposed to help its son — after she was accused of stealing thousands of dollars in jewelry.
Zelda Lawson was hired to be in the family’s home to take care of a boy with cerebral palsy. Court documents say Lawson stole more than $10,000 worth of jewelry from the southeast Oklahoma City family.
“I couldn’t believe it,” said a family member who did not want to be identified. “We gave this lady money because we felt sorry for her.”
To the family, she stole more than just jewelry. She also stole the family’s trust.
“I didn’t know anyone could be with this boy and take care of him and then do something like that,” the family member said. “We trusted her with him.”
The family started to notice pieces of jewelry missing earlier this month.
“(She) stood up and said, ‘I’m sorry. I took it. I was in a financial bind,’” the family member said.
