Aggies LT Koda Martin will be a married man with a new key position

Koda Martin begins the season moving from right tackle to left tackle on Texas A&M’s offensive line. That position is the “blind side,” and the left tackle’s Job 1 is to protect the quarterback on passing plays. More pressure?

“Pressure is something you put on yourself,” Martin said. “As a coach’s kid, that’s what my dad tells me and I just try to take it in stride. The standard is high, the standard is winning no matter what position you’re at, so I wouldn’t say there is pressure. I will do whatever it takes to help my team win, and I am looking forward to getting after it this season.”

The junior will go into preseason practice as a newlywed. Martin and Jazzmin Babers, a former Texas A&M volleyball All-American, will be married on Friday in Bryan, Texas. A week later, Martin reports for practice.

“It will be tough, but we’ll figure it out,” Martin said.  “It’s a football life; she understands it. She was a volleyball player, so she understands that life, [and] her father’s a college football coach. She’s going to be able to handle it and get with it.”

Going from honeymoon to practicing in College Station’s August heat will be a challenge, but Martin appears unperturbed at handling the challenges of married life and an important position on the offensive line.

“I know that I come from a place that puts out a lot of good tackles,” said Martin, whose full first name is Dakoda. “I have a platform to use that and get after it, and I’m excited to be able to have that role on my team … I’m long, athletic, I used to play tight end in high school, little bit of defensive end, so I know the other side of it.”

Both starting tackles from last season’s offensive line – Jermaine Eluemunor and Avery Gennesy – were NFL draft picks. And over the last five years, the Aggies have had four offensive tackles selected in the first…
