$20 million Keck Foundation gift to Chapman University names science center – Orange County Register

ORANGE — The W.M. Keck Foundation is giving Chapman University a $20 million gift, which will name the school’s upcoming 140,000-square-foot science center “The Keck Center for Science and Engineering.”

The gift, which was announced in a special ceremony Thursday, Sept. 28, completes funding for the $130 million center, set to open in fall of 2018.

The Keck Foundation has been a major donor toward the sciences in Southern California, with its name attached to institutions such as the Keck School of Medicine at USC, the Keck Institute of Space Studies at the California Institute of Technology and the Keck Graduate Institute of Applied Life Science at the Claremont Colleges. This is the foundation’s largest donation yet in Orange County.

Chapman President Daniele Struppa said carrying the Keck name is an honor and a sign of recognition for the value of Chapman’s scientific efforts. The Keck Center, he said, will be the crown jewel for the sciences at Chapman, comparable to the university’s Marion Knott Studios for its film and media arts studies or the Musco Center of the Arts for performing arts.
