Three Arab citizens of Israel fatally shot two Israeli police officers in a rare attack at one of the holiest sites in Jerusalem on Friday before being shot and killed, police said.
The assailants opened fire on the officers from the contested shrine known to Jews as the Temple Mount and to Muslims as the Noble Sanctuary. Two other police officers were wounded.
The attackers were from Umm el-Fahm, a city in northern Israel. The shrine is the holiest site in Judaism and the third-holiest in Islam and has sparked major confrontations in the past. The latest attack has raised new concerns about an escalation of violence.
